The Institute for Development and Peace Studies (Indepaz) reports that Colombia has more than 100 murders of peasant and indigenous representatives so far this year, and after the murder of the president of the Tenjo Community Action Board, Álvaro Roncancio, the number rose to 101.

The crime occurred in the urban area of Palmira, Valle del Cauca. Roncancio had previously reported threats to his life, which forced him to move from the rural area where he lived.

The organization reported hours before the murders of Jhon Esneider Pabón Osorio and Cayetano Pedroza Molina, members of the Catatumbo Peasant Unity Association (Asuncat) and community rights defenders in Tibú, Norte de Santander.

Although the incident is still under investigation by officials, Asunción authorities have denounced repeated threats against social leaders in the region and pointed to the National Liberation Army (ELN) as allegedly responsible for these crimes.
