More than 60 civil organizations requested urgent legal action this Thursday to close the 'Alcatraz Caimán' detention center, located in the Everglades of Florida, USA, after the entry of the first group of migrants. Associations question access to legal defense, family visits and independent oversight within the campus.

The center, built in eight days on top of an old airport, has been criticized for its conditions, its location in a sensitive ecosystem and the risks of flooding during the cyclonic season. Images on social media show leaks following a recent storm. Activists and experts doubt their ability to withstand severe weather events.

The attorney general of Florida, James Uthmeier, confirmed on Wednesday in his X account the arrival of the first migrants to the compound. During the official visit of President Donald Trump and Governor Ron DeSantis, it was reported that the center's capacity is up to 3,000 people.
