In order to provide an immediate response to the effects caused by intense rainfall, the Vice Presidency of Public Works and Services, led by Jorge Márquez, initiated comprehensive maneuvers to restore traffic between the states of Mérida and Táchira, after the collapse of the Guarurías bridge.
In the company of the governor of the state of Mérida, Arnaldo Sánchez, Transportation and Public Works authorities confirmed the progress of dredging and channeling the river, essential actions to stabilize the land before proceeding with civil repairs at kilometer 15 of the road to San Cristóbal in the Alberto Adriani municipality, reported the Ministry of Popular Power for Electric Energy (MPPE), on its website.
“Less than 48 hours ago, as a result of the rains, the bridge collapsed and we already have regional and state government teams working. We are evaluating the works that are being carried out and we estimate that in two weeks this bridge should be ready,” said Márquez.
Multidisciplinary teams are making progress in opening alternative routes to ensure the mobility of citizens and the transport of cargo.
In this regard, Sánchez indicated that a temporary road will be set up at night. “The technical and engineering review has already been done. The temporary passage will be opened at night so that cars can pass, but we are keeping the Zea and Santa Bárbara roads active,” he explained.
Regarding the works to be carried out, the Minister of People's Power for Transport, Aníbal Coronado, stressed that they will install new bases to reposition the bridge structure.
According to Civil Protection reports, in addition to the severe damage to the right abutment of the Guarurías bridge, there are six flooded houses in the Onia sector and damage to sections of the Local road 008 (Los Túnels road) as a result of the increase in river flow.
