On October 19, 1917, the provisional president of Venezuela,
Victorino Márquez Bustillos, decreed the creation of the Museum of Fine
Arts of Caracas, a cultural institution that was initially located
at the Central University of Venezuela (UCV).
The first
exhibition consisted of 153 Venezuelan works by 19th century
academic teachers in addition to the new trends
pertaining to the Academy of Fine Arts, according to a review published on the website
of the National Museum Foundation.
This emblematic museum was
the first created for the exhibition of plastic arts and is one of
the oldest cultural heritages in the country.
Later,
in 1938, the Museum of Fine Arts was moved to Los
Caobos Park in Caracas, where the architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva designed a
large neoclassical building as its official headquarters.
This space then passed into the hands of the National Art Gallery until
2008. It currently has 18 rooms, where
collectible works from different periods and cultures from Latin America,
North America and Europe are exhibited, as well as a valuable compilation of works on
paper, Egyptian art and Chinese ceramics.
