National Assembly began public consultation for the reform of the Law of the Supreme Court

The core of this reform contemplates the amendment of Article 8 of the current law

The National Assembly (AN) formalized the official start of the public consultation on the Partial Reform Project of the Organic Law of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), whose objective is to collect proposals from various sectors before the final sanction of the regulation.

The core of this reform, approved in the first discussion on May 5, contemplates the amendment of article 8 of the current law, in order to expand the structure of the Plenary Chamber to reach a total of 32 active magistrates.

At an event held at the headquarters of the Supreme Court, Judge Caryslia Rodríguez, president of the Judiciary, together with the deputy Nicolás Maduro Guerra, president of the Permanent Committee on Internal Policy of the AN, led the meeting. Both emphasized the importance of an inclusive process involving different actors of civil society.

In this regard, the president of the Permanent Committee on Internal Policy of the AN, Deputy Maduro Guerra, stated that the proposal to amend this legislation is addressed to Article 8 of the Organic Law of the Supreme Court of Justice (LOTSJ), which establishes that five of the Chambers are made up of five judges and that the Constitutional Chamber is composed of seven members.

He pointed out that “the goal of justice, the pinnacle, is to continue with this prestigious Supreme Court, which has been the guardian in these difficult times in Venezuela, with magistrates dedicated to working hard to assert the rule of law of the Nation.”

In addition, Maduro Guerra indicated through his official channels that the Legislature seeks to build a justice system adapted to the current needs of the country. The national deployment will serve as a thermometer to adjust the technical details of the legal document.

For her part, the president of the Supreme Court and president of the Electoral Chamber, Judge Caryslia Rodríguez, said that this reform is not only raising a number of magistrates, but involves a great force of jurists, women and men who are scholars, with human sensitivity to form part of the Judiciary, which will make it possible to nourish debate and judgments to achieve the objectives of the Homeland.

As part of the Consultation, the judge of the 32nd trial of the Criminal Judicial Circuit of the Metropolitan Area of Caracas, Virginia Castellano Márquez; the judge of the Communal Peace of Ciudad Caribia, Danny Morillo; and the deputy to the AN, Luis Florido, intervened.

Magistrates from the different Chambers of the High Court were present; the secretary of the AN, María Alejandra Hernández; deputies to the National Assembly; the Executive Directorate of the Judiciary; the General Inspectorate of Courts; the National School of the Judiciary; judges of the Judiciary; judges of the Communal Peace and electronically more than 300 connected rooms from all over the Venezuelan territory.

Once the cycle of debates has ended throughout the territory, the Commission will collect the comments to prepare the final text. This report will be submitted to the plenary of the National Assembly for its second regulatory discussion.

After approval in Plenary, the law will be sanctioned and sent to the Executive for its respective enactment in the Official Gazette. With this, it is expected to begin the administrative and operational restructuring of the Supreme Court of Justice immediately.
