The National
Library of Venezuela's Autonomous Institute and Library Services carried out various
activities to commemorate the 173rd anniversary of the birth
of José Martí, Cuban leader and emblematic figure of revolutionary and anti-imperialist thought
in Latin America.
The program, which
was carried out in conjunction with the Casa de Nuestra América José Martí and other
institutions, included a forum at the
Bolivarian University of Venezuela (UBV) with the participation of rector Sandra Oblitas, representative María León and representatives of the Embassy of Cuba, where bibliographic works were donated for students.
In addition, there was also a
walk in the state of La Guaira
to celebrate 145 years since Martí's arrival to the central
Venezuelan coast, a torch march in Plaza Bolívar in Caracas and a cultural meeting at the José Martí School in the Sarría sector.
The director of the National Library, Jorge Berrueta Simancas, emphasized the validity of Martí's
teachings, pointing out that his humanistic and patriotic thinking takes on
special relevance in the face of contemporary challenges, and stressed the need to promote his legacy in schools to counteract anti-values.
With these activities, the National Library promotes the preservation
of historical memory, the exchange of ideas and critical thinking in Venezuelan
society, in line with other similar tributes made in
the continent for the anniversary of the birth of the independence leader.
