The authorities announced the partial closure of the road that connects Maracay with the Choroní parish starting Tuesday, October 13, after a technical diagnosis that determined soil saturation and accumulated geological damage along the road artery
In this regard, the preventive measure responds to the intense rainfall of recent days, associated with tropical waves 55 and 56, which exceeded 60 millimeters of water and dramatically increased the risk of landslides.
For his part, the mayor of the Girardot municipality, Rafael Morales, explained that the closure begins 48 hours in advance to safeguard residents and vacationers. “We hope by Thursday or, at the latest, by Friday to have these 28 points stabilized,” he said.
Similarly, municipal engineer José Quijada explained that the terrain shows abnormal post-seismic behavior due to the fracture of the “rock bridges” in the rock mass of Henri Pittier National Park. Consequently, this condition causes displacements to occur with minimum levels of saturation.
For their correct approach, the teams divided the road into three specific sections: Sector A (up to kilometer 14), with extreme slopes greater than 45%; Sector B (from kilometer 14 to 28), characterized by residual and wooded soils; and Sector C (from kilometer 28 to 42), located in the lower area with numerous water channels, said Quijada.
The specialist also clarified that the cartographic mapping counted 6.1 kilometers in the red zone, 14 in the yellow zone and multiple critical points with water crossings. In this way, planning will ensure the efficient execution of stabilization works.
