The “Dr. José Gregorio Hernández” Hospital Infrastructure Recovery Plan began the execution of a macrostructural rehabilitation project at the facilities of the Dr. José María Vargas Regional General Hospital, in the state of La Guaira.
This comprehensive intervention, articulated between the Ministry of People's Power for Health (MPPS) and the Ministry of People's Power for Public Works (MPPOP), currently focuses its work on the reactivation of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for adults and the refurbishment of basic clinical areas to ensure the strengthening of the public care system.
As part of the commitments made, the work crews completed the waterproofing of 900 square meters of roofs and the recovery of two water pumps for the dialysis service. Current projects include the evaluation of main pipelines and the chlorination of the water system to ensure the full operation of this healthcare center in the coastal region, MPPS press reports.
During a technical tour of the aforementioned health space, the president of the Foundation for Hospital Buildings and Equipment (FUNDEEH), Verónica Ramírez, verified the progress of the works, including the installation of new pumps with a power of two horsepower (HP) for tanks with a capacity of 90,000 liters of water, an infrastructure that supplies exclusively to the dialysis unit for the benefit of chronic patients.
For his part, Alirio Antequera, responsible for the plan for the Public Works and Services area, reported that the works are being carried out in simultaneous phases. “In the adult ICU, the crews carried out the cladding of walls, friezes and lighting installation under medical standards. This space will have a total rehabilitation and air conditioning system in the coming days for the expansion of the hospital's critical beds,” he said.
In addition, the administrative deputy director of the hospital, Yoanny Herrera, highlighted the positive impact of the work in the area of emergencies and outpatient clinics.
Herrera stressed that deep maintenance of the physical plant facilitates the reactivation of fundamental services such as pediatric therapy, pharmacy, warehouse, children's surgery and surgical subspecialties, for the benefit of 400 patients operated on a monthly basis.
Currently, the technical staff is complying with the replacement of main pipes for drinking water and the adaptation of the wastewater network.
In addition, crews from the National Electric Corporation (CORPOELEC) carried out corrective maintenance and repair of the hospital's electrical generators, actions that guarantee the stability of the electrical fluid in the face of any contingency.
The Dr. José Gregorio Hernández Plan began in April 2026 with the intervention of priority centers for its subsequent progressive expansion at the national level. This program of the Venezuelan State aims at the recovery and deep maintenance of public hospital infrastructure.
