Pope Leo XIV announced that he will undergo surgery in the coming days to remove a nodule located in one of his lungs, detected during recent medical checks.

“Recently, during some checks, doctors found a circumscribed nodule in my lung,” the pontiff reported this Sunday after the Angelus prayer, from the Apostolic Palace, a Venezuelan television report.

The leader of the Catholic Church explained that his doctors recommended the intervention and thanked the faithful for their spiritual closeness, while asking for their prayers.

Leo XIV turned 71 on September 14 and was elected pope on May 8, 2025.
