The Prime Minister of Portugal, Luís Montenegro, announced this Thursday, July 31, that his country will officially recognize the Palestinian State during the next session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), next September.

This decision, according to the office of the Head of Government, is taken in response to the worsening of the conflict in the region and the risk of an Israeli annexation of Palestinian territories, reports the Al Mayadeen website.

With this announcement, Portugal aligns itself with countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom and France in its position to endorse Palestinian sovereignty.

The Portuguese Government has expressed concern about the humanitarian impact of the conflict and the constant signs of territorial annexation by Israel.

The news was well received by Jordan, whose Foreign Ministry described it as a significant development. Spokesman Sufyan Al-Qudah stresses that the decision is a positive response to international efforts to recognize Palestine within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international law.

Portugal's decision is part of a wave of international recognition of Palestine and of increasing pressure on Israel due to the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
