President Maduro congratulates the U-16 national basketball team for its world championship ranking

The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro celebrated the victory of the under-16 national basketball team, which managed to beat the Dominican Republic, in the quarterfinals of FIBA AMERICA 2025, which is being played in Nicaragua. 

 “This June 6, Venezuela from the heights achieved a historic ranking. For the first time in the U16 category, he advances with this competitive team to the FIBA U-17 World Cup in Türkiye 2026", wrote the president on his account on the social network Telegram.

The head of state added: “Your victory against the Dominican Republic is a definitive step in this feat. Congratulations, guys! You are the country's victorious generation, and you represent the dignity of sports and warrior youth.”

Venezuela had a historic rendezvous this Friday when it decisively defeated the Dominican Republic in the quarterfinals of the FIBA AmeriCup U-16 2025 for the semifinals and one of the four tickets to the FIBA U-17 World Cup 2026.

Those led by Alexis Cedres came to the tournament as the champions of South America and before that the Caribbean scored 71 points against 53.

Before, the Criollos lost to Canada (62-66) and Puerto Rico (68-67), and they closed the group stage with a victory over Brazil (75-67) and this afternoon at the mercy of the Dominicans 71-53.
