During his program With Maduro+, the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, referred to the recent statements of his Colombian counterpart Gustavo Petro regarding the need to refound the Gran Colombia project promoted in the 19th century by the Liberator Simon Bolivar, but which was demolished as a result of the betrayals of Francisco de Paula Santander in Colombia and José Antonio Páez in Venezuela.

“I totally agree to refound that Gran Colombia,” he said while considering that this confederation comprised of both countries should have as its starting point the creation of a binational development zone.

“The new Gran Colombia must be based on a new binational economy,” he said, while informing that he had sent a letter to his counterpart in the New Granada nation in order to make progress on this point.

“I sent a letter to President Petro stating the need for him to instruct his teams so that we can move rapidly towards a binational area of shared development. The businessmen are already prepared and there are specific plans, I welcome the presence of President Petro on this visit and I am reading the news that he is going to sign the Silk Road treaty, I think it's very good, and between two, Petro-Maduro, Colombia-Venezuela, we can bring investment, capital and markets with the Chinese for a powerful binational economic zone,” he stressed.

After recalling that Gran Colombia was one of the dreams of Supreme Commander Hugo Chávez, the head of state remarked that “the destiny of Venezuela and Colombia must be an integral and productive union.”
