The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, denied the existence of any bilateral agreement with the United States (USA) to implement the so-called “Portero Project”, an operation announced by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) as part of its strategy against drug trafficking on the southern border.
“The DEA issued a statement saying that there is an agreement with the Mexican government for an operation they call Portero. There is no agreement with the DEA,” Sheinbaum said Tuesday in statements to the press.
The statement released by the DEA on Monday details that the “Portero Project” would be a joint operation to dismantle the so-called “guardians” of the cartels, operators who control drug, arms and money smuggling corridors between Mexico and the United States.
The agency presented the plan as its “flagship operation,” and even mentioned the participation of Mexican researchers in a border intelligence center.
