The president of the National Assembly (AN), Jorge Rodríguez, stated that, in the debate on the amnesty law, the country must look at the “example and guidance of Hugo Chávez” remembering that, on April 14, 2002, after being kidnapped and after attempts to assassinate and expel from the country, he “raised a cross, asked for forgiveness and forgave”.
“We ask for forgiveness and we have to forgive too,” he said.
Rodríguez reiterated that the discussion about this law takes place in a context marked by the aggression of January 3, 2026, when 120 people were murdered and the constitutional president Nicolás Maduro and the deputy and first lady Cilia Flores were kidnapped.
“You are going to ask for your prisoners; we are going to ask for as long as we have life left for our prisoners, for Nicolás Maduro, for our kidnapped Nicolás Maduro,” he said.
The President of Parliament warned that the legislative process for the approval of the law will not be free of tensions.
“This path is going to be full of obstacles, disappointments, leading positions and unfair decisions,” he said.
He asked the opposition group to also evaluate their own path: “Put your hand on your heart and ask yourself if you have rectified, because you have made mistakes.”
Rodríguez urged deputies to face the debate with dignity:
“Let's be courageous, let's be just, let's be true Christians, even if we don't profess a religion. Let us take the word of Christ to embrace each other in forgiveness”.
The president of the AN insisted that the amnesty law must be oriented towards national healing.
“Let us insist on the need to heal wounds and to always keep in mind the early morning of January 3, 2026,” he said.
