During the Extraordinary Virtual Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, described the assault on the Mexican embassy in Ecuador as barbaric.

He also said that Ecuador is not setting an example of coexistence, “it is repeating a message that comes from times when only death was possible, not exile, nor saving life, I don't know for what reason.”

“Comparatively, what happened in the Iranian embassy or what is happening in Gaza is not the same thing, even as the Middle East, where it is precipitating war, confrontation, is not comparable, but it has to do with the same thing, barbarism.”

The Colombian president said that “we are all responsible that these barbaric expressions are not repeated in Latin America. We have to agree to live together.”

Petro questioned the fact that Ecuador and Israel are practically shaking hands in “the competition for barbarism.”

In that regard, he invited them to delve into the topic of human rights.
