Deferred pediatric surgery for abdominal wall defect in a newborn at 28 weeks of gestation represented a historic medical breakthrough for the Amazonas Maternal and Child Hospital (HMIA).

According to a report published by the State Health Directorate of the region, it became known that this high-risk surgical intervention occurred on May 6, 2026 as part of the strengthening of the National Public Health System (SPNS) to highlight the work of the multidisciplinary team that guaranteed quality care to save the life of the infant.

It also mentions that the diagnosis of non-complex gastroschisis required an immediate and accurate response due to the frailty of the premature patient. During the operation, doctors maintained constant monitoring of vital signs while applying appropriate corrective techniques for this type of neonatal pathology.

This joint work demonstrates the technical capacity of local professionals, who took on the challenge of performing surgery that usually requires transfers to larger centers outside the entity.

The leadership of the intervention fell to the resident and tenured physicians of the hospital after an exhaustive prior evaluation of the clinical case.
