Patients with chronic renal failure and their families staged mobilizations and sit-ins in the cities of Quito and Guayaquil to demand the urgent allocation of medical resources and supplies, after denouncing the imminent collapse of dialysis services throughout Ecuadorian territory.
The peaceful protest denounced the Ecuadorian State's accumulated default for more than 26 months with dialysis centers and specialized private clinics, a situation that paralyzes the care of thousands of sick people and puts the continuity of their vital treatments at serious risk.
Quote from the spokespersons of the demonstration regarding the impact on those affected: “The crisis of renal patients at the national level has overwhelmed the economic sphere to move to an inhumane situation, due to the lack of political will and institutional abandonment on the part of the Executive”.
Faced with the health emergency, the demonstrators urgently called on the national government to settle the outstanding financial commitments to the health network, warning that the interruption of dialysis therapy represents a direct violation of the right to life and public health of the Ecuadorian population.
