Republican and Democratic legislators denounce that the President of the United States, Donald Trump violated the Constitution by ordering bombings against Iran without authorization from Congress.

The United States Congress condemned the military attack against three nuclear facilities in Iran and described the action as a flagrant violation of the U.S. Constitution, as it had no prior legislative approval, TeleSUR reports

“This is not constitutional,” Republican congressman Thomas Massie wrote on social media, directly citing the presidential message that announced the attack.

For his part, the Kentucky legislator stressed that the Constitution gives Congress the exclusive authority to declare war, a fundamental principle that he considers violated by the unilateral action of the Executive.

Meanwhile, Democrat Jim Himes, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, recalled that congressmen “must have a voice on these types of issues before the bombs fall.”

The Democratic caucus is preparing a formal resolution to investigate the circumstances of the attack and evaluate possible legal consequences against the Trump Administration for violating constitutional prerogatives.

Constitutional experts warned that the precedent sets dangerous grounds for future unilateral military action.
