This Monday, the Prime Minister of Romania, the Social Democrat Marcel Ciolacu, announced his resignation from office, after discussing with the ruling coalition the results of the first round of the presidential elections, Russia Today (RT) detailed.

The reaction comes just after the first round of the presidential elections this Sunday, when the far-right candidate George Simion, leader of the nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) party won the victory, which came in fourth place in the canceled presidential elections last November with 40.94% of the votes, beating traditional candidates.

Ciolacu recalled that the current government coalition was formed after the parliamentary elections in December and after the Supreme Court canceled the first round of the presidential elections held at the end of November 2024.
