Russia condemns tightening of US sanctions against Cuba

The Russian Government rejected the recent tightening of United States sanctions against Cuba, calling them “totally unacceptable”, according to the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, María Zajárova.

During an official statement from Moscow on July 4, Zakharova reiterated that any unilateral sanction against sovereign states contravenes the Charter of the United Nations and the principles of international law. He also expressed his opposition to any type of pressure on the Cuban government or its population.

“We strongly reject the restrictive measures against Havana and consider any type of pressure absolutely illegal,” he said, while stating that, despite the obstacles imposed by Washington, Cuba will continue to strengthen its foreign economic relations.

As published by the web portal, Sputnik, the statement adds to the historic positions of solidarity between Russia and Cuba in the face of US-led sanctions policies.
