The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) arrested a Ukrainian special agent in the Republic of Crimea, who was accused of manufacturing an improvised explosive device (IEI) to commit sabotage and terrorist acts on the peninsula.
“It was established that a resident of Feodosia, born in 1965, offered his help to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and was persuaded by his representative for confidential cooperation,” said a statement. After obeying instructions from his supervisor, the suspect extracted prefabricated components from two hiding places in the Republic of Crimea and armed with these an AEI composed of a high-powered explosive weighing more than 1.2 kilograms, a electric detonator, a home-made radio signal receiver, a radio electronic transmitter and nails weighing almost 500 grams, the FSB detailed.
The man planted the bomb in a hiding place, in the Balaklava district of Sevastopol. The FSB Research Department for the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol opened a criminal case against the detainee for “high treason in the form of providing financial, technical or other assistance to a foreign state, international or foreign organization or to its representatives in activities directed against the security of the Russian Federation”.
He was also accused of “the illegal acquisition, transfer, sale, storage, transport, shipment or carrying of explosive substances or explosive devices”. In addition, a preventive measure was taken against the suspect in the form of detention in custody.
