The Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, warned that the actions of the West and its allies are considerably increasing the risk of turning outer space into a conflict zone.
“As a result of these destructive actions, the risk of militarization of space and its transformation into a conflict scenario increases significantly,” Lavrov said.
During a message addressed to the participants of the Moscow Conference on Non-Proliferation, the Foreign Minister reiterated Moscow's position against the militarization of outer space, recalling that its use is regulated by the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.
This instrument of international law establishes that space exploration must benefit all humanity and prohibits the appropriation of celestial bodies by any State.
The treaty also expressly prohibits placing nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit around the Earth, a principle that Russia considers fundamental to preserving peace in space, which includes beyond the Earth's atmosphere, including the Moon.
