The total volume of financial assets of BRICS member countries has exceeded 60 trillion dollars, which is more than half of the world level, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov announced this Friday.

During his speech at the Board of Directors of the New Development Bank (BRICS Bank), on the sidelines of the summit of the block held in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, Siluanov stressed that the importance of countries in the Global South is growing every year, according to a note published on the Russia Today portal.

“We see that the population of the countries of the Global South represents almost 70% of the world's population, and their share of the world's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is almost 60%,” said the senior Russian official.

He added that “the total volume of financial assets has reached more than 60 trillion dollars, that is, more than 50% of the world level.”

In addition, the minister emphasized that the New Development Bank represents the main financial instrument for carrying out new investments and new projects within the BRICS. “And not only in the BRICS countries, but also in the countries of the Global South,” he added.

Siluanov highlighted the importance of increasing investment in infrastructure. In this regard, he considered it essential to adopt a renewed approach to attracting funding, which involves generating stable long-term capital flows and considering the use of digital financial assets.

Last week, the director of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Kiril Dmitriev, announced that the total volume of domestic trade of the BRICS countries reached one trillion dollars, which, according to him, “confirms the strengthening of economic ties and the growing role of the association in shaping the new world architecture.”
