The Scottish Parliament formally backed the proposal to hold a new consultation on independence from the United Kingdom. The decision, announced by the Government, opens a new chapter in the national political debate and seeks to reactivate the process of self-determination following the consultation held just over a decade ago.

This parliamentary support is based on the will to update the political relationship with London. The measure comes in a context where various political forces have pushed to reevaluate the sovereignty path in the face of the current transformations and challenges facing the region, setting a significant precedent in the democratic exercise of its institutions.

Scotland's recent electoral history is marked by the vote of September 18, 2014, when 55.3% of the population spoke out against the separation. On that occasion, 44.7% of citizens voted to constitute themselves as an independent State, leaving a margin that the authorities now seek to submit again to popular consideration.

The approval of this initiative places the Scottish government in a position of direct negotiation with the British authorities on the viability and date of the process.

While the terms of the call are being defined, public opinion remains attentive to the constitutional repercussions that this historic vote could generate in the future of the United Kingdom.
