The President of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, and his counterpart from the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, have sealed a new phase in bilateral relations after a high-level meeting at which 19 strategic agreements were signed.
Sánchez stressed that this collaboration seeks to consolidate China as a fundamental actor for international stability, stressing the importance of the Asian country being seen by Spain and the whole of Europe as a key partner for investment and economic cooperation.
Within the package of agreements reached, a dozen are focused exclusively on the economic sphere, in order to energize commercial exchange between the two nations. In this context, the Spanish leader confirmed the beginning of a “strategic dialogue” with Beijing, reaffirming their mutual commitment to strengthening value chains and promoting a solid business climate that benefits both the European and Asian markets.
On the geopolitical level, Sanchez urged Xi Jinping to play a much more active role in resolving major global conflicts, with special emphasis on the search for peace in the Middle East. The Spanish president insisted that China's involvement is essential for the balance of the current world order, appealing to the diplomatic capacity of the Asian nation to mediate in crises affecting international security.
For his part, President Xi Jinping defended the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, issuing a warning against the selective use of international law. The Chinese president stressed that global norms cannot be applied conveniently and warned of the danger that the international system will drift towards “the law of the strongest”, calling for maintaining equity and mutual respect in relations between states.
