A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.0 occurred this Sunday in the South Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Chile, according to official reports released by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake occurred specifically at 5:34 p.m., Chilean standard time, with its epicenter located at a distance of approximately 36 kilometers northwest of the city of Valparaiso.

After the initial report, the specialists of the technical body began to review in detail all the available information to adjust the metrics of the event. The seismologists clarified that there is a possibility of modifying the reported magnitude of the earthquake as the exhaustive analysis of the records obtained by global monitoring networks progresses.

In the same way, it was detailed that additional data that continues to be collected in the next few hours could cause USGS scientists to update the map of the severity of the movement. This tool is crucial to estimate more precisely the level of shock experienced by the population and to evaluate the real impact on the structures of the nearest continental areas.

The technical report recalled that aftershocks are common in the region, defined as earthquakes of lower intensity following the main event in the same geographical area.

These phenomena represent minor rearrangements along the portion of the fault that slipped at the time of the initial earthquake, so the authorities recommend that citizens keep informed through official channels.
