The judge of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) of Brazil, Alexandre de Moraes, asked the governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, to provide information about the mega-police operation he ordered to deploy against the Red Command, which left more than a hundred dead.

In a statement, the highest court explained that a hearing was scheduled for November 3, at the request of the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH), which stated that the police operation was “the most lethal in the history of Rio de Janeiro.”

At the hearing, Castro and the state's Secretary of Public Security, as well as other officials, must provide details of the operation, the level of force used, the number of agents involved, as well as the official balance of victims, among other aspects.

In addition, the judge requested meetings with the president of the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice, the attorney general and the ombudsman.

The request for explanations is part of a previous judgment of the Court, in which a series of new rules were issued for carrying out police operations in the favelas of the state of Rio de Janeiro, with the objective of preventing human rights violations.
