Supreme Court promotes debate about the National Consultation for Penal Reform

Judges, secretaries and bailiffs of the criminal judicial circuits of the Metropolitan Area of Caracas and the states of Miranda and La Guaira , participated with their contributions, ideas and proposals in the working groups of the National Consultation for Penal Reform.

According to information published by the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) on its Instagram account, the activity was set up by the president of the highest court, Judge Caryslia Beatriz Rodríguez Rodríguez, who stated that this moment “It is an invitation to self-review, to self-criticism, to the possibility of being able to correct, to empower ourselves, to create new possibilities and alternatives in the face of one of the most important functions, and perhaps one of the more complex, such as the imparting of justice”.

In addition, Judge Carmen Marisela Castro Gilly, President of the Criminal Cassation Chamber, said that “These working groups provide us with the opportunity to listen to different voices, exchange experiences and responsibly evaluate the challenges currently facing criminal justice. Always with an eye on the protection of human rights, effective access to justice, social peace and the well-being of our people.”

The Attorney General of the Republic and Secretary of the National Consultation for Penal Reform, Larry Devoe, said that officials from the justice system, universities, human rights organizations, academic sectors and various personalities who have worked with criminal justice are participating in this process. “We don't develop public policies behind closed doors, but listening to stakeholders,” he emphasized.

The installation of the working tables was accompanied by Judge Lourdes Suárez Anderson, Vice President of the Constitutional Chamber; Judge Eulalia Coromoto Guerrero Rivero, member of the Criminal Cassation Chamber; the Executive Director of the Judiciary, Dr. Jenifer Fuentes; the Inspector General of Courts, Dr. Carolina Rodrígues; and the presidents and president, respectively, of the criminal judicial circuits of Caracas, Miranda and La Guaira, Dr. John Parody, Dr. Franz Ceballos, and Dr. Dayanhara González Seijo.
