On June 1, 1816, the patriotic forces led by the Liberator Simón Bolívar carried out the Taking of Carúpano, an emancipatory feat that marked the beginning of the revolutionary counteroffensive that would sweep South American lands to the Spanish Empire.

After setting sail on May 25 from Margarita Island as part of the Keys Expedition, the independence fighters arrived on the shores of the city of Carúpano, where they faced realistic forces that attacked with cannons the liberation fleet that managed to dock on a beach near Fort Santa Rosa.

The coordinated action so that while the royalists were turning their attention to the coasts, on the left flank the patriot forces under the command of General Manuel Piar and Colonel Carlos Soublette, managed to take the fort in a battle that lasted about two hours without loss among the patriots.

This is where Bolívar proclaims the abolition of slavery and then follows Ocumare de la Costa.
