Honduran teachers continue this Tuesday with new mobilizations after the stoppage of activities carried out on Monday, June 1, throughout the public system. The union maintains these pressure measures in response to the non-compliance with a wage adjustment that, according to educators, was an official commitment established by the government of President Nasry Asfura.
The Federation of Teachers' Organizations of Honduras (FOMH) expressed in a statement its rejection due to the lack of implementation of the increase. The organization emphasized that the wage adjustment is not an ongoing negotiation, but rather a commitment that government authorities had to execute and that is still pending payment.
As part of the protest actions, the union activated a “fallen arms” strike in schools across the country. Faced with this situation, the leaders asked parents not to send students to classes during the day, apologizing for the inconvenience that the interruption of the academic calendar may cause to families.
Educators argue that their decision responds to the defense of decent and quality public education. In addition to complying with the wage increase, they demand the retroactive payment of the corresponding increases since the month of January, a point that they consider non-negotiable to stop their protest actions at the national level.
The FOMH urged the Executive to implement concrete actions to strengthen the education system. The union also included in its demands greater attention to social programs, with special emphasis on improving school nutrition for students in the public sector.
