This Tuesday, the Supreme Court of Colorado banned Donald Trump from running for the presidential primaries in that state of the North American country.

“Because he is disqualified, it would be an unlawful act, under the Electoral Code, for the Colorado Secretary of State to include him as a candidate on the presidential primary ballot,” the court ruling states.

The Supreme Court's decision was based on a clause in the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that states that “no person may be (...) president (...) if, having previously taken an oath of support for the Constitution of the United States, he has participated in an insurrection or rebellion against it, or given aid or comfort to his enemies.”

It is worth remembering that the participation of the then Republican president in the events that led to the attack on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021, qualifies as an insurrection before what was stated by the Colorado Supreme Court.

According to what was published on the TELESUR web portal, the court decision was suspended until January 4, to allow for possible appeals.
