The authorities of the port city of Bahía Blanca, in Argentina, have counted 16 deaths and more than a thousand evacuated due to the great storm last weekend and early this Tuesday morning . So far, more than 100 reports of missing persons have been registered.

All activities were canceled, and the situation is comparable to the floods in La Plata in 2013 and Santa Fe in 2003. The search continues for the sisters Delfina and Pilar Hecker, aged 1 and 5, who were swept away by the current in the middle of the storm.

The city is located in the lower basin of the Napostá stream. The overflow of this stream and the Maldonado Canal left much of the area underwater. Specialists identify extraordinary rainfall, the vulnerable location of the city, deficiencies in urban planning and the growing influence of the climate crisis on the frequency and intensity of these phenomena as determining factors, according to a note from International Media.

On March 10 of this year, Javier Milei's administration dismantled the National Emergency Directorate three days before the storm in Bahía Blanca, leaving the population of zone 4 without protection. There are 16 deaths reported (which may increase) and serious damage to the city's general infrastructure.
