The jockey Junior Alvarado and the karateka Yorgelis Salazar were chosen as Athletes of the Year 2025, after the election promoted by the Venezuelan Sports Journalists Circle.
Alvarado won the Male Athlete of the Year award after an extraordinary season, winning two of the three most important events in American racing, becoming the fourth Venezuelan rider to achieve the historic victory in the Kentucky Derby, one of the most coveted competitions in the world.
The rider reached a total of 41 points for first place, surpassing Grand League Eugenio Suárez with 27, in a global vote that totaled 579 points.
For her part, Salazar, the fourth best karateka in the world, won the Female Athlete of the Year award with 21 votes, surpassing Yulimar Rojas who reached 11.
Salazar won bronze in the French Premier League in January and bronze in the World Cup in Egypt in November. He added two golds in the Bolivarian Games (individuals and teams) and for the fifth year in a row he finished in the top 5 of the International Karate Federation, according to the newspaper El Líder.
Meanwhile, softball closed a dream 2025, winning the awards of Coach (Ramón López), National Team, Manager (María Soto) and Sports Entity of the Year (FevesSofbol); while Cardenales de Lara, it was recognized as the Professional Team of the Year.
