On October 28 and 29, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) resumes the debate on the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba, a policy in force for more than 60 years and repeatedly condemned by the international community.

The Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez, heads his country's delegation at the forum of 193 member States, the Telesur website reported.

He points out that this is the thirty-fourth time that a draft resolution calling for the lifting of the siege, considered the longest in contemporary history, has been put to the vote.

The Cuban authorities insist that this policy constitutes the main obstacle to national development and violates the DDs. HH. of his people.

During his stay in New York, Rodríguez denounced diplomatic pressure exerted by Washington on several countries, especially in Latin America and Europe, in order to modify his traditional vote in support of the draft resolution.

The minister stated that these actions are part of a larger campaign of “information poisoning” aimed at distorting the image of Cuba before the international community.

It also warns of an escalation in economic coercive measures, in particular financial persecution and restrictions imposed on companies providing fuel to the island.

The Cuban Government has also denounced the cumulative impact of the blockade on key sectors such as health, food, energy and transport. In the last year alone, damages amounted to more than $7.5 billion, representing an increase of 49 percent over the previous period.

Added to this is the inclusion of Cuba in the unilateral list of States sponsors of terrorism, a measure that reinforces the financial and commercial obstacles imposed by Washington. The Cuban authorities consider this designation to be unfounded and politically motivated.

At least 49 delegations are expected to speak at this year's session to express their positions. The Cuban Government has reiterated that it will continue to defend its sovereignty in all multilateral spaces and has called on the international community to maintain a firm stance in the face of a policy that it describes as unfair and prolonged.

The text presented by Cuba to the General Assembly argues the extraterritorial nature of the blockade and its contradiction with international law and the principles of sovereignty and equality between States.

The resolution has been supported for decades by groups such as the Non-Aligned Movement, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
