This Wednesday, the President of the United States (USA), Donald Trump, signed an executive order to impose an additional 25% tariff on India “in response to the continued purchase of Russian oil”.
This new rate will begin to be applied within 21 days and is in addition to another 25% rate due to take effect on Thursday, according to the decree, bringing the combined tariffs imposed on the Asian nation to 50%.
“He found that the Indian government is currently importing, directly or indirectly, oil from the Russian Federation. Consequently, and in accordance with applicable legislation, items from India imported into the U.S. customs territory will be subject to an additional 'ad valuem' duty of 25%,” the document states.
Trump warned that his administration “will determine if any other country imports, directly or indirectly, oil from the Russian Federation” and, depending on this, senior officials such as the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio; the Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick; the Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem; or the US trade representative, Jamieson Greer; may suggest if he should take other measures, “including the imposition of an additional 'ad valuem' tariff of 25% on imports” from that country.
“Petroleum of the Russian Federation means crude oil or petroleum products extracted, refined or exported from the Russian Federation to”, regardless of “the nationality of the entity involved in the production or sale of such crude oil or petroleum products”.
