The Department of the Treasury of the United States (USA), included Alexandre de Moraes, minister of the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil in charge of the trial against the far-right Jair Bolsonaro, in the list of people sanctioned by the Global Magnitsky Act, a legal instrument that allows the Donald Trump administration to punish foreigners accused of corruption or serious human rights violations.
Sanctions may include the freezing of assets in the United States and the blocking of transfers in dollars, even if they are made outside the United States, as well as the cancellation of credit cards, details Hispantv.
The Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, accused Moraes of being “responsible for a repressive campaign of censorship, arbitrary arrests that violate human rights and politicized judicial processes, including against former President Jair Bolsonaro.”
Recently, the Brazilian Attorney General's Office (PGR) asked the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to sentence former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro to more than 40 years in prison for attempted coup d'etat, armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law and damage to federal property.
