Leaked diplomatic cables that The Intercept had access to revealed that the United States is using Ecuador to lobby the Security Council of the United Nations against the creation of a Palestinian state.

Ecuador, which serves as a non-permanent member in this instance of the multilateral organization, would be carrying out the task of persuading other countries to deny this proposal, which is expected to be discussed this Thursday.

According to the publication of The Intercept, one of the cables, dated April 13 and sent from the U.S. Embassy in Quito, gives an account of the agreement reached with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of Ecuador, Gabriela Sommerfeld.

In addition, the revealed evidence that Sommerfeld ordered the representative of Ecuador to the UN, José De la Gasca, to pressure Japan, South Korea and Malta, to reject the proposal to recognize Palestine as a State, an action that would seek to prevent the United States from using a veto that would be frowned upon by the international community.

“It's important that any proposed resolution failed to achieve the necessary votes without the US veto,” Sommerfeld would have said.
