Thousands of ultra-Orthodox Israeli Jews staged a day of protests in the streets of Jerusalem against the absence of a law that exempts them from compulsory military service.

As detailed by the international news agency RT, the day of protest ended tragically when a teenager died. The demonstrations caused interruptions in transportation in and around the city, as well as the deployment of thousands of police officers.

The participants marched along the main avenues leading to the city, carrying banners against the Supreme Court decision that overturned the exemption they were benefiting from. Crowds of men wearing black hats set fire to pieces of canvas as law enforcement cordoned off several avenues to control the excesses.

The Israeli ambulance service reported that a 15-year-old boy died after a fall and the police announced the opening of an investigation into the incident. It is estimated that around 200,000 people supported the protest.

Approximately 2,000 police officers were deployed during the demonstrations. Altercations are reported between officers, journalists and demonstrators.
