The world's greatest cycling festival, the Tour de France, is facing an invisible but powerful enemy: extreme temperatures as a result of climate change.

This is indicated by a study published in Scientific Reports carried out by the Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) in France, in collaboration with institutions such as the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the ISGlobal in Barcelona.

The research thoroughly analyzed the climate data of the last fifty editions (1974-2023) and reached a disturbing conclusion: the risk of thermal stress for athletes has grown steadily, reaching critical levels in the last decade. The rise in temperatures is not just a number on a thermometer, it is a direct threat to the physical integrity of runners .
