This Monday, the President of the United States (USA), Donald Trump, threatened a new imposition of “secondary” tariffs of 100% on the Russian Federation if the Kremlin does not reach an agreement with Ukraine in the next 50 days to end the conflict that has been going on for more than three years.

Trump's threat represents a new tightening of US economic policy against Moscow, and could have a significant impact on Russian foreign trade, which has already faced restrictions since 2022.

Trump's statement comes in a context of diplomatic stalemate between Moscow and Kiev. Although Türkiye has tried to facilitate a bilateral negotiation process in Istanbul, no substantial progress has been made since June.

Telesur explained that Trump imposes a deadline of 50 days, that is, until the end of August 2025 for the Kremlin to accept a framework agreement that will end the war. It is not yet clear what minimum conditions Washington requires, nor if partial ceasefires or a withdrawal of Russian troops from occupied territories are contemplated.
