This Sunday, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake recorded near the coast of the southern Philippines this Sunday, June 7, 2026, has triggered the activation of a tsunami alert for various regions of the Pacific Ocean.

Seismological agencies have warned that high-altitude waves could reach coastal areas in the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Japan, Papua New Guinea and the U.S. territory of Guam, urging local authorities to coordinate the evacuation measures necessary to protect the population.

According to technical reports, it is estimated that the first waves of the tsunami could impact the Philippine coast in a time range between 7:37 and 9:37 local time. Faced with this imminent threat, emergency services have recommended that residents of the provinces of Sarangani, Davao Occidental, Tawi-Tawi, Sulu, Basilan, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Sultan Kudarat and Cotabato Sur should move to high ground or move into the interior of the islands without delay.

The United States Tsunami Warning System is keeping under investigation the possible impact on American Samoa, while continuing to constantly monitor seismic activity in the area. The magnitude of the earthquake, whose initial shock has generated concern both because of its intensity and its geographical location, has motivated the deployment of rapid response protocols in island nations that are in the potential trajectory of the waves.

The authorities maintain the call on the population to follow only the instructions of civil protection agencies and to keep abreast of official updates as the situation develops.

The damage assessment process and the monitoring of the tsunami alert are the immediate priority for governments in the region, which are working to mitigate the risks derived from this natural event.
