A severe rainstorm hit the city of Istanbul, the capital of Türkiye, over the past few hours, causing severe flooding, the collapse of major transport routes, the suspension of school activities and the tragic death of three people, including a minor who died by electrocution.
According to information highlighted in Telesur, the Interior Minister of Türkiye, Mustafa Çiftçi, reported the deployment of more than 8,000 rescue personnel and the evacuation of more than 2,700 affected people in critical districts such as Beykoz, Eyupsultan and Sariyer, while the search continues for four citizens who disappeared after the overflowing of streams.
Faced with the impact of the rains in the Aegean metropolis, rescue authorities deployed heavy machinery and boats to handle more than 2,500 emergency calls associated with landslides and massive floods in urban and commercial areas.
The Istanbul Mayor's Office warned that various sectors registered the highest accumulations of water seen in the last four decades, direct evidence of the global climate crisis and the urgency of strengthening public infrastructure in the face of extreme weather events.
