The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) approved this Tuesday a resolution calling for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” in Gaza, following the escalation of violence that has occurred in the Middle East since last October, which already leaves more than 18,000 Palestinians killed by Israeli bombings.
According to a note from the UN News Center, the resolution was approved with 153 in favor, 10 against and 23 abstentions.
The vote took place after the body resumed its special emergency session on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on Tuesday, which has lasted several decades, while the crisis in Gaza shows no sign of abating and the Security Council remains stalled.
Submitted by Egypt, the draft resolution was co-sponsored by Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen and the State of Palestine.
In addition, Austria and the United States submitted amendments, which were not approved.
In this regard, in his account on the social network X, the Foreign Minister of the Republic, Yván Gil, welcomed the approval of a new resolution, however, he pointed out that despite the fact that it is a sentence with humanitarian reasons, the United States continues to reject the initiative.
“The UN Assembly once again votes in favor of a ceasefire in Gaza for humanitarian reasons and once again the United States and Israel are honoring their legacy of death and destruction by voting against. So did an increasingly small number of countries,” he said.
