Francesca Albanese, special rapporteur of the United Nations (UN) on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, applauded Spain's move to join the lawsuit brought by South Africa against Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

“Congratulations to Spain for joining the South African genocide case against Israel in the ICJ. I hope this marks the beginning of more Western countries taking similar steps. It's not too late to put yourself on the right side of history,” said the Italian lawyer on her account on the social network X.

In this regard, he called on Western governments to go beyond words of “condemnation” in the face of indiscriminate Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, clarifying that the words make no sense “without action”.

Albanese denounced that the lack of effective measures to condemn and stop the massacre of Palestinians in Gaza in the last eight months of the war has allowed Israel to “intensify its illegitimacy” against the Palestinian people until “genocide”.
