This Monday, the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, urged unity in the face of contemporary forms of slavery that go against basic human rights, slow down development and root inequalities.

With regard to the celebration of the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, the High Representative assured that this threat also undermines sustainable economic development.

Gutierrez quoted by Prensa Latina reported that nearly 50 million people around the world remain trapped in terrible conditions due to human trafficking, forced labor, sexual exploitation and compulsory marriage.

The diplomat called on states to comply with what was agreed in last September's Future Pact, a document that demands an end to contemporary forms of slavery.

“To turn words into deeds, governments must strengthen law enforcement, defend human dignity, protect, release and support victims, and bring perpetrators to justice,” he said.
