The Security Council of the United Nations (UN) added five new non-permanent members this Tuesday, 02, to five new non-permanent members: Algeria, Guyana, Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone and Slovenia, who will occupy the seats that were previously held for two years in Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates, reported the Prensa Latina website.

He points out that during the installation ceremony, the ambassador of France, the country that holds the presidency of the Council this month, Nicolas de Rivière, highlighted the leading role that the five nations will play in the debate and search for solutions to the increase in regional conflicts and crises.

“I am thinking in particular of the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Africa. We look forward to working with you for the next two years to implement the mandate of this Council: to preserve international peace and security and to defend multilateralism that respects the values of the United Nations Charter,” said de Rivière.

He points out that on January 23, the UN Security Council will begin its quarterly debate, focusing on the situation in the Middle East.

The five newly elected countries will join Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland as non-permanent members, so that the 10 nations are selected to provide regional balance and elected by the General Assembly, composed of the 193 states that make up the UN.

For their part, China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States maintain the power of veto and occupy a permanent seat each in the 15-member forum.
