Catherine Russell, executive director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), in the context of the unprecedented humanitarian crisis that is hitting Haiti, stated that displaced children urgently need a safe and protective environment to prevent further tragedies.

60% of minors have been displaced due to gang violence, according to a report from the agency. The estimated number of children affected amounts to 300,000, which represents more than half of the 600,000 displaced inhabitants in the Caribbean country.

The situation is critical, especially in the capital, Port-au-Prince, where rampant violence has forced entire families to leave their homes in search of safety and humanitarian assistance.
