The city of Chicago, United States (USA), was the scene this Sunday of one of the most significant rallies so far this year, after Mayor Brandon Johnson called for a massive general strike in rejection of what he described as the “tyranny” of President Donald Trump.
The act of protest is part of the growing opposition to Operation Midway Blitz, a federal campaign launched last September 9 to detain undocumented immigrants with criminal records.
Johnson, appealing to historical memory and social unity, emphasized that “if my ancestors, as slaves, were able to lead the largest general strike in the history of this country (...) we can do this today. I'm calling on all black people, white people, brown people, Asian people, immigrants, gay people all over this country, to rise up against tyranny.”
The strike not only seeks to stop the migratory operation, but also to demand economic justice.
Johnson proposed that the ultra-rich and large corporations pay their taxes, to finance essential services such as building schools, generating jobs, universal health care and improving public transportation.
