The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and Antigua and Barbuda signed, this Thursday, November 28, the “Memorandum of Understanding for Strategic Cooperation” in various areas of interest between the Venezuelan Ministry of Popular Power for Foreign Affairs and the island nation's Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and Blue Economy portfolio.”
During the activity, the Foreign Minister of the Republic, Yván Gil, explained that this mechanism seeks to address the difficulties experienced in this area by the countries of the region, while noting that it is born out of a series of challenges faced and plans to function as a mechanism of synergy that can protect peoples in the agro-food sector.
He also called for the unity of the Peoples, because, “although an individual country does not have the capacity to supply itself with 100% of its food for various reasons, if we make true integration, we can complement our capacities”.
“This is a project that, although it becomes a basis for the food sovereignty of the ALBA-TCP countries, it also becomes an important economic development opportunity for the agriculture of our people,” he added.
He specified that beyond an economic relationship, the signing of this Memorandum represents a “truly revolutionary alternative, because it is not only the economic purpose, we want economic sectors to progress, invest and develop, but the real goal is integration, it is joint growth, the exchange of experience and, above all, to provide food security”.
In his speech, the Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and Blue Economy of Antigua and Barbuda, Anthony Smith, reiterated his nation's commitment to collaborating with the economic development of the region.
“These are very important programs designed to combat poverty and support the eradication of social difficulties, but they also help promote the active participation of our citizens to defend our independence and sovereignty as members of ALBA-TCP, based on solidarity and cooperation,” he said.
He thanked the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and ALBA-TCP for the support they have always provided to the Caribbean country.
For his part, the executive secretary of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America - Peoples' Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP), Jorge Arreaza, thanked the representatives of the island nation for realizing this initiative to work together.
“Nothing more beautiful than working the land together, producing food for life, that can serve for the social prosperity of our peoples, for our youth, for the future of Caribbean countries,” he said.
