The Minister of Popular
Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, commemorated this Thursday the 12th
anniversary of the proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace
by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
Through his Telegram
channel, Gil highlighted that this day represents “an essential milestone” in the
“collective search for peace, stability, cooperation and mutual respect among the
countries of the region”, stressing that “this declaration not only reaffirms
the commitment of member States to the peaceful resolution of conflicts
and the rejection of foreign intervention, but also promotes
regional integration”.
The
Venezuelan diplomat regretted, however, that this Zone of Peace has been violated “by external
actions, such as the militarization of the Caribbean by the
United States, which has resulted in the bombing of small boats and the loss of more than 100 lives.
In addition, the unjustified military attack against Venezuela,
killing the civilian population, which culminated in the kidnapping of President
Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, in contravention of the UN Charter and international law.”
“In the face of these
interferences, it is imperative that we strengthen and defend our Zone of Peace,
” he added in his message.
